Web Reconnaissance for 10/16/2006

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

Crazy Politico writes Disaster For The Democrats “The Democrats may have already faced their 2008 presidential disaster this past week. The withdraw of Mark Warner from the race before it's even begun has all but ensured Hillary Clinton to be the party's nominee in 2008. Yes, I know John Kerry, John Edwards, and maybe even Al Gore will toss their hats into the ring sometime around July of 2007, but the truth is Hillary will get the nomination, very possibly assuring the GOP another term in the White House.” (READ MORE)

Victor Davis Hanson writes The New Old Eco-Pessimism “The release of Al Gore’s environmental documentary An Inconvenient Truth — and its attendant criticism that our heating planet arises out of Western pathology — harkens back to a long tradition of gloom and doom in Western thought and art. Hesiod, the 8th-century B.C. Greek poet, sang of a past Golden Age long lost by the greedy and small-minded farmers of his own time. The famous chorus of Sophocles’ Antigone marveled how the clever Greeks of his day had to ply technology endlessly to recapture a modicum of what nature used to offer up spontaneously.” (READ MORE)

Ian of HotAir writes Murtha in WaPo: Confessions of a ‘Defeatocrat’ “Rep. John Murtha, a decorated Marine veteran who favors withdrawing U.S. troops from Iraq, wrote an essay for Sunday’s Washington Post blasting Republicans for referring to him and other Iraq war opponents as ‘Defeatocrats.’ In his opinion piece, first published on the Post’s Web site Saturday night, Murtha, D-Pa., said…’It’s all baseless name-calling, and it’s all wrong,’ Murtha wrote. ‘Unless, of course, being a Defeatocrat means taking a good hard look at the administration’s Iraq policy and determining that it’s a failure.’” (READ MORE)

Lorie Byrd writing at Wizbang writes The Media Will Have a Hard Time Spinning a Democrat Loss “Over at Wizbang Politics there are several posts linking to stories about the way some in the media are spinning recent polls and how many are overplaying the Democrats' edge. I just wonder how the election results will be spun if the Democrats fall short. Such high expectations are being set that if Democrats do not win enough seats to take control of the House and/or Senate the story of their failure will be huge.” (READ MORE)

Grim writing at Blackfive writes Forged in Hellfires “In the comments section to this post at Villainous Company, longtime commenter and friend *JarHead Dad* wrote something outstanding. I imagine many of you know him, at least online. He wrote: ‘War Is Hell!
I remember like it was yesterday when our young Marine came marching out on the parade deck of Parris Island sporting a brand new chevron proclaiming him a PFC in the United States Marine Corps! A merit stripe earned in the sand fleas and swamps of South Carolina. God how proud I was. I bet I stood a full two inches taller. His Mom squeezing my hand harder as his Training Battalion passed the stands. The tears of pride I enjoyed wiping from her cheeks. The virality, the strength, a man where a boy should stand. It was all there.’”(READ MORE)

Captain Ed writes Stewart To Claim Uncontrolled Emotion Defense “Lynne Stewarts faces sentencing today for acting as a conduit for terrorist Sheikh Omar Abdel Rahman, the "blind sheikh" who helped organize the first terrorist attack on the World Trade Center in 1993. She transmitted his commands to his followers while in an American prison, helping to launch a terrorist network, and Stewart got convicted for providing material support. She has spent most of the intervening time traveling the nation and speaking out against the government, claiming she did nothing wrong and that the Bush administration wanted to silence her. Now, however, the New York Sun reports that she will change her tune significantly for her sentencing hearing:” (READ MORE)

Mohammed of Iraq the Model writes There are heroes, and there are criminals. The two never equate as victims. “There is one video I wish I can find on the web. It's a short video that was shown on al-Iraqiya last Friday evening and was replayed several times that night. Until I can find a way to get a copy of the video and put it up I will try to share with you a description of what I saw…” (READ MORE)

John Hawkins writes The Democratic Underground Thread Of The Day: It's Civil War Time Again “You know, the left has gotten so bizarre, so over-the-top, that it's almost impossible to parody them. Liberals talking about how much they hate Christians? It's a regular thing. Calling Bush Hitler? It's passe. Declaring that Republicans are evil fascists? It's old hat. Are we at that point now with liberals calling for a Civil War? It seems to be an increasingly regular occurrence. And just to prove the point, here's the latest thread from the Democratic Underground calling for a revolution, starting with the original post:” (READ MORE)

Cassandra writes Pillars of Government Week: Part IV, The Executive “After taking a day off to recuperate, today we take on the Executive branch. Grim comments: ‘The executive is made up of two types: those who are part of the administration itself, either by election or political appointment; and those who are career civil servants.’ We find this a useful way to organize today's discussion, but the President is such a compelling figure that we would further subdivide the conversation to single out the Presidency as a unique category of office meriting its own separate discussion.” (READ MORE)

McQ of QandO writes PROJECT HERO - LCPL Christopher Adlesperger, Nominee Medal of Honor “Marine Lance Corporal Christopher Adlesperger has been nominated for the Medal of Honor for action in Falluja. In the action, for which he is cited, LCPL Erick Hodges, one of Adlesperger's best friends, was killed. It was to recover Hodges body and to protect other wounded Marines that then PFC Adlesperger almost single-handedly killed 11 insurgents in fierce fighting.” (READ MORE)

Jonjayray writing at Stop the ACLU writes A New Hole in the “655,000 Dead Iraqis” Claim “I have not yet commented on the latest Lancet report of huge post-invasion mortality (”about 655,000″ extra deaths) in Iraq as it seemed perfectly obvious from the outset to me and to many others that it was just a piece of agitprop that would have done the old Soviets proud. You would have to be a Leftist to believe that nobody else noticed 655,000 corpses. I have googled up quite a few comments on the study now, however, and I have not so far found anybody who has noticed the really glaring defect in the study.” (READ MORE)

American Citizen Soldier writes RETURN OF TALES FROM THE FRONT Warming The Bench “Not long after arriving in Tal Afar last summer our platoon rolled into a small town called Muhalabiyah, roughly 30km outside of the city. We stopped by the local police station in order to try to establish some initial rapport, as well as to troll for any actionable intel. While we were there, the IPs received word that a mukhtar (a local official) had just been ambushed and assassinated while foolishly out driving alone. He was most likely killed for agreeing to work and collaborate with coalition and Iraqi security forces. This type of intimidation over here is unfortunately quite common.” (READ MORE)
