Armstrong, Bush Ride with Wounded Veterans
Wednesday Apr 27, 2011 10:06:32 EDT
TERLINGUA, Texas — Kenneth Butler touched the metal end of his prosthetic arm instinctively as he recalled the horrors he witnessed in Iraq.
Four years after losing his limb when his vehicle was hit by a bomb in Baghdad, the retired Army staff sergeant got his first chance this week to meet former President George W. Bush during a three-day bike ride in West Texas attended by more than a dozen other wounded veterans and cycling legend Lance Armstrong.
Bush rode in the event for a chance to meet with veterans and thank them for their sacrifice. But for Butler, he holds no ill-will toward the man who sent thousands of Americans to war in 2003.
“I feel his compassion,” the retired parachute infantry squad leader said Wednesday, with a note of melancholy. “It feels like he really cares about us.”
Bush and 15 wounded veterans were joined Wednesday in the last leg of a 62.5-mile ride through the rugged desert trails of Big Bend National Park by Armstrong, the seven-time Tour de France champion.
Although Bush acknowledges struggling to keep up during the trek, he said he relished the opportunity.
“As a commander in chief, it was my decision to put them in harm’s way in the first place,” he said. “I feel a special bond toward them and I want them to know I’ll never forget them.”

Fayetteville, NC To Honor Military All Month Long
Fayetteville, NC - Fayetteville/Cumberland County announces its line up of events and activities taking place during the third annual 31 Day Salute, formally 31 Days of Glory, a month-long celebration kicking off on May 1 for soldiers, vets and their families. The community believes its military heroes deserve more than just one day in May, Memorial Day, to be recognized for their service and has dedicated the entire month to doing so. This year, new groups have enlisted to participate in 31 Day Salute by hosting exciting events while other groups have returned to offer crowd favorites.
The 82nd Airborne Division’s All American Week is back from May 16-20, after being on hiatus last year due to a high number of deployments. The week will include a four-mile run, various sporting and social events, wreath laying ceremonies at several monuments, and a division review on Pike Field with troopers in formation. During this time, the 82nd Living History Detachment will be at the 82nd Airborne Division Museum as well.
Those seeking an outdoor adventure can take part in the Cape Fear Botanical Garden’s Red, White and Blueberry patriotic scavenger hunt, May 1-31, to find and identify plant species associated with red, white or blueberries. Members of the military can take advantage of special discounted admission to the Garden throughout the month.
History buffs looking to re-live the history of the American Civil War can enjoy the Cumberland County Goes to War exhibit at the Fayetteville Area Transportation & Local History Museum, May 1-31. This exhibit will observe the Sesquicentennial of the war, the community’s role in the war, along with artifacts, pictures and educational panels.
In March, to build excitement across the U.S. for May, military appreciation month, and for 31 Day Salute, the community kicked off the search for America’s Most Patriotic Person with ‘Patrioke’ or Patriotic Karaoke. Enthusiastic patriots have been flocking to local spots such as Cross Creek Mall and Fayetteville State University to compete for the title, all performing the beloved American song Yankee Doodle Dandy. One patriot will be selected at the end of April and crowned as America’s Most Patriotic Person at an event during 31 Day Salute. The performances are currently being broadcast to the world on a ‘Patrioke’ YouTube channel and those interested in competing can submit their own videos online.
31 Day Salute reflects the collaboration of various community organizations dedicated to supporting the military. Recognized by Peter Greenberg in Newsmax magazine as one of America’s most patriotic communities and by TIME magazine as America’s most pro-military town, Fayetteville/Cumberland County is the ideal place to honor the military.

Deadline for Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay Extended
The deadline extension is included in the continuing resolution signed by President Obama Friday, providing funding for federal government operations through April 8, 2011.
Retroactive Stop Loss Special Pay was established to compensate for the hardships military members encountered when their service was involuntarily extended under Stop Loss Authority between Sept. 11, 2001, and Sept. 30, 2009. Eligible members or their beneficiaries may submit a claim to their respective military service in order to receive the benefit of $500 for each full or partial month served in a Stop Loss status.
When RSLSP began on Oct. 21, 2009, the services estimated 145,000 service members, veterans and beneficiaries were eligible for this benefit. Because the majority of those eligible had separated from the military, the services have engaged in extensive and persistent outreach efforts to reach them and remind them to apply. Outreach efforts including direct mail, engaging military and veteran service organizations, social networks and media outlets, will continue through April 8, 2011.
To apply for more information, or to gather more information on RSLSP, including submission requirements and service-specific links, go to http://www.defense.gov/stoploss.
