Web Reconnaissance for 01/20/2006

A short recon of what’s out there today that might draw your attention.

Michael Yon’s blog is now a full fledge site. Michael Yon: Online Magazine, his most recent post is Operation Iraqi Children: A Bright Shining Hope “Education in Iraq - Soldiers love to visit Iraqi schools. The teachers are welcoming, and the kids are always excited. The children burst into smiles and waves, but seem to be almost nailed to their seats: they do not get up without the teachers’ permission.”

Captain Ed of Captain’s Quarters writes The DoJ Defends The Administration On InterceptsRaw Story acquired a draft of an official Department of Justice memorandum that gives the legal justifications for the warrantless NSA intercepts authorized by the President. Raw Story has the PDF as a link on its site, but in the interest of splitting the bandwidth investment, I'll host it here as well. Readers who have followed the story here as well as at Power Line or The Volokh Conspiracy won't find anything terribly surprising, but those who have not followed the actual legal arguments might find themselves surprised just how much supporting precedent exists for the authorization and subsequent approvals by the Attorney General.”

Matt Heidt of Froggy Ruminations writes UBL: Closet Republican “Once again on the eve of an important election, UBL has bailed out the Republican Party in general and President Bush specifically. His latest message is truly a late Christmas gift to the President and his supporters in Congress just like last time.”

Cassandra of Villainous Company is writing again and her most recent addition is American Dummitude: The End Of Western Civilization? “On a brilliant September morning in 2001, four planes hurtled out of an azure sky and caused the world to tilt on its axis. The shock of their impact is still felt halfway around the globe.
It has become fashionable (or perhaps merely convenient) to forget the unity America displayed in those early days. But when George Bush stood atop that pile of smoking rubble and vowed the terrorists would shortly hear from us, he had the backing of both parties in Congress. The Patriot Act passed 357–66 in the House and 98–1 in the Senate.”

Enjoy.
