A short recon of what’s out there today that might draw your attention.
t.f.boggs writes: Who's intolerant now? “Newsflash: Muslims are an intolerant people. I am not saying that Islam is an intolerant religion, and I will not make a statement like that in this blog, I am just saying that mainstream Muslims are intolerant. Somehow the mainstream media has missed this fact completely. However, and I will probably only say this once in my life, I don’t exactly blame the media for not reporting it. With the current Danish cartoon scandal having already swept through the Muslim community other less then tolerant behavior springs to memory for me.”
Capt B of One Marine’s View writes, I KNEW THIS WAS GOING TO HAPPEN: “So, I’m in my sleep coma and life is good. Then the alarm clock from hell part two sounds off at 0130 Monday morning. The Super Bowl pre game is starting and I asked myself, self why am I getting up??”
LTC (Ret) Oliver North at Townhall writes, The pen and the sword: “In the play, Richelieu, Edward Bulwer-Lytton, the English novelist and playwright, wrote, "the pen is mightier than the sword." Were Lord Lytton alive today, he would likely concede that the pen has been supplanted by a television camera -- and swords by lethal projectiles and explosives. But it's doubtful that the author would have claimed that those who use pens -- or cameras for that matter -- were more important than those who wield the weapons. Yet that seems to be the way it is today for those who fight in, and cover, the war in Iraq.”
Captain Ed at Captain’s Quarters writes Well-Planned Spontaneity: “The ruckus over the Prophet cartoons continued to inspire violence over the weekend, with two Danish (Lebanon, Syria) and one Norwegian (Syria) consulate burnt down in Southwest Asia, victims of angry mobs. The idea that these mobs formed spontaneously and erupted in anger gets disputed by today's Guardian (UK), which calls the protests the result of some "well-planned spontaneity":”
Cassandra of Villainous Company writes Freedom, Tolerance, and the Double Standard: “As I noted a few days ago, the recent controversies over the limits of self-expression in a free society are rife with hypocrisy on both sides. This is not surprising, for arguments about free speech expose the underlying conflict between two cherished pillars of Western society: individual freedom and tolerance. The unpleasant truth is that a society which places no limits on free expression must tolerate even ideas that are profoundly intolerant, and however much Americans may revere the 'right' to free speech in the abstract, what most of us really want is the right to offend our ideological opponents with impugnity. Our lofty principles rarely outlive the realization that our own sacred ox has just been gored.”
Sgt B of The Gun Line writes Ahhh... Islam... “As you know, the Muslims in Europe are having a temper tantrum... Over pictures; cartoons, actually... I don't take kindly to threats. I don't take kindly to folks telling me that their faith is greater than mine, and demanding that I respect it. You EARN respect, lads, and thus far, I'm not impressed with the whole Muslim ‘scene’”
