Web Reconnaissance for 02/07/2006

A short recon of what’s out there today that might draw your attention.

Phil of Phil and Becky writes Muslims gone wild... again: “It looks like; once again, crowds of angry Muslims are frothing at the mouth all over the Middle East. Apparently, a non-Muslim has committed the horrific act of drawing a satirical cartoon of the Prophet Mohammed.”

Captain Ed of Captain’s Quarters writes The Dionne Amnesia: “E. J. Dionne, one of the best liberal columnists in America, suffers from a strange attack of amnesia in today's Washington Post. He argues that the tax cuts have crippled the American budgeting process, which I'll get to momentarily, but he also lays the blame on George Bush's father for disavowing his compromise with Democrats on taxes in 1990:”

Confederate Yankee informs us that Iran Requests Holocaust Cartoons: “IRAN'S largest selling newspaper announced today it was holding a contest on cartoons of the Holocaust in response to the publishing in European papers of caricatures of the Prophet Mohammed.”It will be an international cartoon contest about the Holocaust," said Farid Mortazavi, the graphics editor for Hamshahri newspaper - which is published by Teheran's conservative municipality.
He said the plan was to turn the tables on the assertion that newspapers can print offensive material in the name of freedom of expression.
"The Western papers printed these sacrilegious cartoons on the pretext of freedom of expression, so let's see if they mean what they say and also print these Holocaust cartoons," he said.”

Cassandra of Villainous Company writes DimWittery Alert: “Leahy Speaks Patrick Leahy - oxygen thief:Leahy, meanwhile, said that while al-Qaida terrorists should be monitored, Bush chose to illegally wiretap Americans' conversations without safeguards to protect civil liberties.
"My concern is for peaceful Quakers who are being spied upon, and other law-abiding Americans and babies and nuns who are placed on terrorist watch lists," Leahy said.”

Omar at Iraq The Model writes Time for a cartoon post…: “I have refrained from writing about the Danish cartoons issue, not because it doesn't concern me but rather because too mush has been written about it and I didn't feel like I would be adding something new to the discussion. However I couldn't resist commenting on some of the most unacceptable reactions by some Muslims…more precisely by some Iraqis. We have all seen common people protesting in the streets of different countries and we heard many condemnations from governments but as far as I know, not a single Muslim government took any action, except for one…Iraq's!”

Wonder Woman at A North American Patriot writes The Curse of High Expectations Last July, in the very early days of this blog, I posted a call for a leader. One that would stand on principle, and be unafraid of doing what was right, and unapologetic for doing it.
In light of today's events, it seems appropriate to revive it now. I am disappointed and disgusted by the actions of my newly minted government.
Once again, the call goes out...My Country Needs A Leader

NOTR at ROFASix the Cav Man writes Mexico Invades US – Again! “What is happening on the US-Mexico border? Once again, Mexican soldiers have invaded the US for the second time in two weeks. This time it was caught on camera by El Paso Fox affiliate KFOX-TV as it was visiting the scene of a Jan 23 armed confrontation between US law enforcement and armed Mexicans on the US side of the border. The KFOX news crew and a Hudspeth’s County sheriff’s deputy being interviewed spotted men who were armed and in uniform approaching the US border. When they saw the camera crew, they retreated. Shortly after that, the deputy spotted other armed men, also in uniform, crossing into the US at another point, attempting to outflank the deputy and news crew. Read about it here.”

Crazy Politco writes It's America's Fault! “Danish and other European countries embassies and missions in muslim countries are being torched, ticked off Iranian mullah's are reminding us of the plight of Salman Rushdie, folks are marching and holding signs asking for beheadings of cartoonists.
So who's at fault for this, the cartoonists, who submitted their work to the Dutch paper? The Dutch newspaper? The other European papers, who in a show of solidarity published them also? Nope, ask Eugene Robinson at the Post, he'll tell you, it's America's fault, or more specifically, George Bush's fault.”

Kobayashi Maru writes 'Folk' Marxism and the BoGlo: Looking for Victims in all the Wrong Places “The Boston Globe today makes an intellectually sloppy comparison: '...publishing the [Danish] cartoons reflects an obtuse refusal to accept the profound meaning for a billion Muslims of Islam's prohibition against any pictorial representation of the prophet. Depicting Mohammed wearing a turban in the form of a bomb with a sputtering fuse is no less hurtful to most Muslims than Nazi caricatures of Jews or Ku Klux Klan caricatures of blacks are to those victims of intolerance.'
Except that Jews in Nazi Germany and blacks in the rural South were not the ones committing wild acts of mayhem and violence - they were the ones being violated to the point that they feared to leave their homes - a point that would seem rather obvious... except at the Globe.”

Wesley Pruden Editor in Chief of the Washington Times writes A missed chance to teach a lesson: “The prophet Muhammad, who lived in the 8th century, never met Boss Tweed, who presided over New York in the 19th. But if the prophet runs into Mr. Tweed at the mall in a modest suburb somewhere they can compare afflictions.”
