Web Reconnaissance for 05/15/2006

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

Captain Ed writes Behind The USA Today Poll “Two major polls attempted to take the temperature of the American electorate in the immediate aftermath of the revelation of NSA data-mining through billions of phone call records. The Washington Post reported that 63% of all Americans did not mind that the telephone carriers, excepting Qwest, had voluntarily given those records to the NSA. Almost in the same time frame, a USA Today/Gallup poll showed a bare majority against it -- but even that poll had contradictory internal information:”

Omar at Iraq the Model writes Iran supplied al-Qaeda in Iraq with AA weapons. “According to this report from Azzaman, Iran's revolutionary guard corps is supplying Zarqawi's al-Qaeda in Iraq with Russian-made anti-aircraft weapons including the infrared guided, shoulder-born missile Sam 7 (Strela) in addition to other weaponry like machineguns and improved IEDs. …Just another example of how helpful a neighbor the Mullahs are, of course! They want everything to be stable on the ground.”

Andi of Andi’s World writes Home of the Brave: Required Reading “I'm often asked why I started my blog. The main reason is that I felt I had something to contribute as a military spouse in a time of war. Tired of having military life and military missions misrepresented by "journalists", some politicians and other talking heads, and fed up with the failure of these same persons to do their jobs and be honest with the public about what is really happening in Afghanistan and Iraq, I began to blog.”

Fellow Fredneckian, Cassandra writes The Moral Fog of War “What an absurd war we are fighting. Often, after perusing the WaPo or the NY Times in the predawn hours, it all becomes just too surreal.”

Fbl writes Today's Must-read Back from Iraq: “…That pronoun "we..." I know what they mean, and so does the soldier of whom the question is asked. But that's a phrase that's always lurched uncomfortably from my lips or fingers on the few occasions I've let it escape. So terribly callous to equate my peaceful existence at home with the horrors and challenges faced on the battlefield...”

Dadmanly writes An Islamic Declaration of War “What’s the best way to summarize the letter from Iranian President Ahmadinejad to President Bush?
I’m afraid that Charles Johnson at Little Green Footballs nails it on the head, headlined An Islamic Declaration of War:”

Soldier’s Angels Germany writes ‘The Difference Between Iraq and Vietnam’ “Greyhawk points us to an article from today's Washington Post about the impressions of soldiers after returning from Iraq.
Through our work at medical facilities in Germany, we've met hundreds of troops who have been sent out of Iraq for medical reasons and suddenly - very suddenly - find themselves in a non-combat environment. Often we spend evenings with guys who woke up that morning downrange.”
