A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

Some Soldier’s Mom writes War Inside the Wire (Yes You Can Handle the Truth) “…I know that people think that Sen. McCain's words deserve special consideration because he is a former POW (and my admiration for him and his experience knows no bounds -- he is my senator), but I ask, did the words on paper of the GC protect him? Those countries that will live by the Conventions will and those that won't, will not care one spit what the US does or does not do.” (read more)

Bruce Thornton writing at Victor Davis Hanson writes Dearest Illusions and Dangerous Mistakes “In 1944 F. A. Hayek wrote in The Road to Serfdom, “The number of dangerous mistakes we have made before and since the outbreak of the war because we do not understand the opponent with whom we are faced is appalling. It seems almost as if we did not want to understand the development which has produced totalitarianism because such an understanding might destroy some of the dearest illusions to which we are determined to cling.” Change “totalitarianism” to “Islamic jihad” and Hayek’s words are still right on the mark.” (read more)

Allahpundit writes Bush assassination film wins festival prize for revealing “larger truth” “By unanimous vote of a five-member jury of the International Federation of Film Critics (FIPRESCI), despite having received ‘largely negative reviews.’ FIPRESCI’s general secretary insists there was nothing political about their decision, and that in fact the film ‘irritated us a lot.’ On what basis, then, did they award it a prize?” (read more)

Hugh Hewitt writes The Pope and Good Faith “Here is the Vatican's statement today about the Pope's speech Wednesday. Many Catholics who pray the Rosary begin with an Our Father, three Hail Marys, and a Glory Be for the special grace the Pope needs in the office he holds. Perhaps Catholics should say an extra decade today as opportunists in the media have taken the occasion of a very thoughtful and necessary address by Benedict to distort his message and indulge the worst interpretations of the remarks.” (read more)

Jay Tea writes The White Man's Burden: Introduction “One of the recurring phrases used by people in arguments is “they just don’t get it.” It expresses the belief that one’s position is the only logical, reasonable, sensible one, and if the other side could simply hear that position spelled out clearly, they would embrace it. It’s rarely effective or useful, but I’m going to give it a whirl anyway. I’m going to spell out, in excruciating detail, just why I think the war in Iraq was right and necessary, and why I support it to this day.” (read more)

Ray Robison writes Secular Saddam “One of the more ridiculous conclusions of the Senate intelligence report phase II is that Saddam was not an Islamist and as a secularist would not have worked with Islamic terrorists. We know this because he told us of course. ‘(U) According to debriefs of multiple detainees-including Saddam Hussein and former Deputy Prime Minister Tariq Aziz- and captured documents, Saddam did not trust al-Qa’ida or any other radical Islamist group and did not want to cooperate with them. Hussein reportedly believed, however, that al-Qa’ida was an effective organization because of its ability to successfully attack U.S. interests.’” (read more)

Pamela of Atlas Shrugs writes Fourth Estate and Fifth Column “The Global Jihad appears to be playing us for fools. The media is the key most powerful weapon in their arsenal. Militant islam understands the power of jihad porn but more importantly, they are brilliant at propagandizing the reportage. The OIC (Organization of Islamic countries) has been urging rich Muslims to buy media organizations for good reason. How much they already own on the UK is anybody's guess.” (read more)

Omar of Iraq the Model writes Bonjour France! “Al-Qaeda and the 'Salafi group for call and combat' are joining forces to fight France. Al-Qaida has for the first time announced a union with an Algerian insurgent group that has designated France as an enemy, saying they will act together against French and American interests. […] In his video, Al-Zawahri hailed ‘the joining up’ of the GSPC with al- Qaida as ‘good news.’” (read more)

Michelle Malkin writes This is What a Real Martyr Looks Like “There's a new Associated Press report on the murder of Sister Leonella that confirms the bloody obvious: An elderly nun who was gunned down at the hospital where she worked in Somalia's capital was "specifically targeted before being executed by gunmen lying in wait," a hospital official said Monday. Willy Huber, regional director of the Austrian-funded hospital where 65-year-old Sister Leonella had worked for four years, said the killing was not random. "She had no chance," said Huber, who heads the S.O.S. Kinderdorf organization in East Africa. “It was like an execution." It was an execution:” (read more)

John Hawkins writes The Geneva Convention Doesn't Offer Our Troops Any Protection “I'm not sure that there could possibly be a dumber argument for coddling terrorists than the one made by Lindsey Graham, who, as per usual, is playing Robin to John McCain's Batman, this time on the interrogation of terrorists. Here's Graham: ‘Weakening the Geneva Convention protections is an unnecessary step and will put our military members and others defending our nation at risk by jeopardizing the protections they currently are provided.’” (read more)

Chickenhawk Express writes Just When You Thought Ted Rall Could Not Go Any Lower... “I don’t even know why I bother but I frequently check out the editorial cartoons on yahoo.com. Sometimes they are funny (yes I do laugh at some of them that reflect poorly on the Republicans because they are usually spot on) but most of the time I feel like I’ve been hit in the gut when I read them. Today was one of those days.” (read more)

Tom The Redhunter writes The Immaturity of the Islamists “Four days ago Pope Benedict XVI delivered an address to some of the3 scientists at the University of Regensburg, Germany. The Pope, then Joseph Alois Ratzinger was a professor and vice rector at the University from 1969 to 1971. The title of the speech was "Three Stages in the Program of De-Hellenization", and it's main focus was just that. The subject matter is very esoteric and academic, and I do not have the knowledge to understand most of what he is saying. The Pope is quite clearly very learned, as must be anyone who hopes to understand his address without doing additional research.” (read more)
