Web Reconnaissance for 09/20/2006

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

Hugh Hewitt writes The Appeasement Press “Here are stories on Ahmadinejad's speech from the Washington Post, the New York Times, and the Los Angeles Times, as well as the AP. The Post's account wholly fails to convey the radical nature of Ahmadinejad's demands and claims: ‘Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad addressed the General Assembly several hours after Bush, and he accused the United States of rigging the United Nations to advance its own military and economic dominance and to oppress its weaker adversaries.’” (read more)

Kevin Aylward writing at Wizbang Politics writes George Allen's Jewish Heritage Confirmed “…In a campaign most notable for missteps, Allen's response confounds pundits, but in our estimation plays very well to potential voters, at a visceral, emotional level. He wasn't being questioned about a his family history, he was being accused of hiding it. The desperation of Jim Webb's Netroots Coordinator Lowell Feld to make this persona matter an issue should be spotlighted by the Allen campaign - repeatedly. Privacy, or more importantly inappropriate incursions into ones private life, is an issue that everyone can identify with, and voters have a history of being very supportive of politicians requests to allow them a level of privacy in their family - for example Clinton and Bush's protectiveness of their daughters privacy.” (read more)

Bill Roggio writes Drawing the Battlelines in Anbar “While the news from western Iraq has focused on the partial leaking of a Marine intelligence report purportedly focusing on the inaccurate reports of the 'loss of Anbar province',' a significant political development has occurred between the Anbar tribes and the Coalition and Iraqi government. The New York Times reported over the weekend that 25 of the province's 31 tribes have organized to oppose the insurgency and al-Qaeda.” (read more)

Captain Ed writes Lord Carey Delivers The Real Thing “For those who insist that Pope Benedict XVI delivered an insult to Islam by pointing out the evil of violent conversion in the use of a single quote from a 600-year-old text, Lord Carey will send them into hysterics. The former Archbishop of Canterbury told an audience at Newbold College that Islam itself is creating a clash of civilizations and praised Benedict for his efforts to bring the conflict to the surface:” (read more)

Wretchard writes Meeting engagment “The worst place for a leader to be is behind those he seeks to lead, desperately calling out to a crowd that is increasingly outdistancing him, in a vain attempt to shift them this way or that. Sometimes opinion "leaders" put themselves in a retrograde position by ignoring what everyone around them plainly sees. Here's an example: writing in the context of the controversy generated by Pope Benedict XVI's remarks, ABC News says the 'Day of Rage' is not a day of rage..” (read more)

Dadmanly writes The Pope Knows “Lee Smith, writing in the Weekly Standard, astutely describes the controversy the Pope has created as a ‘prick in the conscience of Catholics the world over.’ Smith makes the argument that Pope Benedict knew full well how his remarks would be received. The Pope and his church know the bitter and violent history of Islam. Contrary to the view expressed by the Editors of the New York Times, the Vatican doesn’t need to ‘understand Islam.’ The Roman Catholic Church has had 1400 years of first hand experience with Islam, as ‘the church has been contemplating its historical rival for about 1,300 years longer than the paper of record.’” (read more)

Oak Leaf writing at Stop the ACLU writes We Won’t Be Breaking or Prosecuting the Next KSM “Victoria Toensing, the former Justice Department official who established that department’s terrorism unit comments, in light of court rules and the Senate games, is America still capable of interrogating terrorist suspects effectively? What kind of information did we get out of KSM that we will no longer be able to get again? (Thank you, John McCain)” (read more)

JB of JB’s Sanctuary writes McCain once again shows his true colors “Once again John McCain is showing why he cannot be President and shouldn’t be a Senator. If I were to give Senator McCain the benefit of the doubt and say that his positions on torture stems from his time as a POW it would not change the fact that he and Lindsey Graham are completely wrong on this issue. I don’t give Senator that benefit by the way. I think he is petty and is doing this to irritate the President and his administration.” (read more)

Bandit 36 writes B36 News - 20 September 2006 “I'm hearing a lot of talk in the news about a recent survey aimed at gauging public opinion for the upcoming elections. Thanks to a tip from The Griper, I got a look at just the numbers of the poll and managed to avoid associated observations. Here's the question I found the most striking about the poll:” (read more)
