Coalition Forces Discover Sizeable Caches South of Samarra

SAMARRA, Iraq – Paratroopers from 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment,82nd Airborne Division, discovered three weapons caches during a dismounted patrol Saturday morning just south of Samarra.

The caches included more than 20,000 rounds of small arms and anti-aircraft ammunition, more than 200 mortars, anti-tank, and anti-personnel mines, eight rocket propelled grenade launchers, three 12.7 mm heavy machineguns, one 30 mm automatic grenade launcher, one 14.5 mm anti-aircraft machinegun, and one claymore mine.

“Along with other recent operations, we have had real success in discovering caches and denying terrorists access to these deadly weapons,” said Lt. Col. Viet Luong, commander of 2nd Battalion, 505th Parachute Infantry Regiment.
