BAGHDAD - Two car bombs detonated in Baghdad Dec. 18, killing 10 civilians and wounding more than 40. Iraqi National Police initially reported the first detonation in a busy marketplace in south western Baghdad in the afternoon. The police responded immediately and cordoned off the area and began to treat the wounded and transport them to a local hospital.

The car bomb was targeted at the local populace. Six people were killed and 24 were wounded.

Coalition forces also responded to the scene and provided support to the Iraqi National Police.

A couple of hours later, a second car bomb reportedly targeted towards the National Police was detonated outside of the security zone set up around the first bomb.

No National Police casualties were reported but there were four civilians killed and an additional 16 people were wounded. The second car bomb consisted of a vehicle packed with ball bearings in order to produce more casualties. No coalition forces were injured in either attack.
