BAGHDAD – Units of the Iraqi Army with Coalition advisors detained two members of the Wasit Provincial Council Jan. 16 during operations in Al Kut. Reliable information led to their detainment on suspicion of facilitating the smuggling of improvised explosive devices and weapons used in attacks against Iraqi Security and Coalition Forces.

During the detention operation, a crowd of Iraqi civilians was present at the Wasit Provincial Complex, but they did not interfere with operations. While conducting their search, Iraqi forces entered a nearby building and were observed by Iraqi Police, who did not interfere.

After a brief search, both suspects were peacefully detained. One was detained in a conference room, the other in the lobby area. Both were escorted to waiting Iraqi Army vehicles. Iraqi and Coalition forces subsequently departed the area with the suspects.
