KALSU, Iraq - Paratroopers detained three suspected insurgents and discovered a large cache containing various small arms munitions, a bullet proof vest, a spool of wire and other improvised explosive device-making material while on patrol in a town south of Baghdad Jan. 11.
Troop C from the 1st Squadron, 40th Cavalry Regiment, 4th Brigade Combat Team (Airborne), 25th Infantry Division searched a house and found approximately 1000 7.62mm rounds, two bandoliers for machine gun drum ammunition, two sticks of explosives and one Chinese hand grenade in addition to other electronic devices.
Moving though the suspected insurgent safe house and making their way onto the roof, the paratroopers discovered a box of Iraqi Army boots, magazine holders for an AK-47, 50 loose AK-47 rounds and several blocks of explosives.
Upon the completion of the search, the three individuals in the house were detained for further questioning. An explosive ordnance team conducted a controlled detonation to destroy the cache
