AR RAMADI, Iraq – During routine security patrols in Ta’meem Jan. 7, three Iraqi Police were wounded by insurgents using mortars.
Iraqi Police from the soon-to-open Patriquin Iraqi Police Station responded immediately to assess the casualties and evacuate them for treatment.
Simultaneously, the Iraqi Police dispatched a team which captured the insurgents, confiscated a mortar tube and uncovered a weapons cache. The cache consisted of: 22 130mm projectiles, four pressure plate IEDs, several RPG rounds, and hundreds of 7.62mm and 9mm rounds.
“These actions are a testament to the growing independence and capabilities of the Iraqi Police,” stated Major Riccoh Player, Ready First Combat Team spokesman.
Sheikh Abdul Sittar, of Anbar, requested the police station be named after U.S. Army Captain Travis Patriquin, a soldier with the 1st Armored Division who was killed in Ramadi last month by a road-side bomb.
Sheikh Sittar is among several Anbar sheiks who have contributed hundreds of tribesman to join the Iraqi Police. Over 1,000 Anbaris enlisted and shipped to the Jordanian International Police Academy in December.
Another 1,000 new recruits are expected to ship again this month.
