The first ever children's playground to be built in Helmand Province, Afghanistan, has gone up in Lashkar Gah – thanks to a Southampton Royal Engineer.
Staff Sergeant Tim Hutton, aged 40, from Fawley, co-ordinated the project to build the play area, which is approximately 50m by 100m. It has swings, climbing frames, a football pitch and a covered picnic area with benches.
It was built by local Afghan contractors at a cost of $52,000 and has been funded by the UK Government from the Quick Impact Projects budget, designed to bring instant benefits to the local population.
