Iraqi authorities have taken control of security enforcement in Maysaan Province, southern Iraq, on Wednesday 18 April 2007.Defence Secretary Des Browne described the move as a 'milestone'. The formal transition of responsibility for security was announced by Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri Al Maliki this morning, after a thorough assessment of the local security and police forces.
Welcoming the news, Mr Browne said:
"I congratulate the Iraqis on what they have achieved in a relatively short period. This is the third of the four provinces we are responsible for to be transferred to the Iraqis – and the fourth across Iraq as whole."
