Iraqi National Police Thwart Future IEDs and Attacks

During a sweep of insurgent strongholds in Eastern Baghdad Iraqi National Police Officers recovered a weapons cache in the Rusafa District of eastern Baghdad:

FORWARD OPERATING BASE LOYALTY, Iraq — Officers with the Iraqi National Police recovered a weapons cache in the Rusafa District of eastern Baghdad Sept. 15

The officers found a rocket-propelled grenade launcher and nine 120mm mortars. The weapons were turned over to the 2nd Infantry Brigade Combat Team’s Special Troops Battalion for their explosive ordnance detachment Soldiers to destroy the weapons.

The discovery comes as U.S. and Iraqi Security Forces continue to sweep out insurgent strongholds in eastern Baghdad. This includes the establishment of Coalition outposts and joint security stations as part of the Baghdad Security Plan to pacify the capital.

Coalition Forces and Iraqi Police units are continuing their sweeps of insurgent areas and finding more and more caches that could be used to kill innocent civilians in an effort to disrupt the political process.

This process can not be allowed to fail and increased security in Iraq is the key to a political success. As the process moves forward the insurgents will feel less and less safe and they will undertake more dangerous missions all in an atempt to sway public opinion that the process is a failure.

Establishing democracy in Iraq is not going to be an easy process, but it is beginning to take root and as the Iraqis step up and begin to turn against the insrgent groups and militias democracy will continue to flourish. If the Democrats would get on board and help promote democracy instead of taking every opportunity to highlight every mistake or perceived failure the process would have moved along a lot further than it has already. Their obstructionist behavior has only made it harder for the Iraqis to step up and begin to lead their country to a democratic future.
