"That's the best way I know to put out an eye!"
{Dad is being sarcastic here. What he means is, "Don't run with that stick!"}
Dads love sarcasm. Its a great way to express their concern but still act tough.
I have to share a quick story here; many years ago, before I was married or had children, I was at a party where there were married couples with children present. A few of the boys had picked up sticks and were running around with them. I calmly walked over to the boys and informed them that if they are going to run with sticks there is a much better way to do it. I then demonstrated the port arms position of holding a weapon across your body. In this manner I told them you can run all you want and have no fear of poking your own eye out, but if need be you can readily jump to the attack (Parry - Thrust) position and advance the stick towards your fellow combatant.
The boys listened intently and then ran off all holding their sticks across their bodies as they ran. When I got back to the deck with the rest of the adults one of the dad's looked right at me and said. "You're going to make a great father someday."
From that day on...I had been cursed.
