Web Reconnaissance for 05/10/2006

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

From USMC.mil Wounded Marine in iconic Fallujah photo awarded Navy Cross “MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, Calif. (May 4, 2006) -- Sgt. Maj. Bradley A. Kasal feels he did what any good Marine would’ve done. That includes taking enemy rifle fire on Nov. 14, 2004, absorbing a grenade blast and refusing medical attention inside Fallujah’s “House of Hell” during Operation Al Fajr (New Dawn). For his extraordinary heroism and leadership in Fallujah, Iraq, as the Weapons Company first sergeant for 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, Kasal was awarded the Navy Cross during a ceremony here Monday.”

Midnight in Iraq writes Musings on Fallujah “I can now say I have seen the much-touted city of Fallujah. From the Euphrates in the west to the rolling farmland just outside the eastern “Cloverleaf” overpass, it is a city with as many personalities as it has citizens. The history I know says that Fallujah has always been a haven for criminals. Saddam decided to ignore it and let it fester into a boil on the buttocks of an already not-so-humanitarian Iraq. One of our native linguists tells me it was a last stop for truckers coming out of Jordan to get some tasty shiskabob before they entered the crowded Baghdad metropolitan area. I cannot speak for its history, but I can tell you that today Fallujah, like almost any city, runs the gamut from gorgeous to ghastly.”

Sgt Dock writes Patient care story “In my time here I have treated only a few Iraqi people for minor cuts and the like. (I have only treated my fellow soldiers for upper-reparatory infections, diarrhea, and headaches mostly.) The worst patient I've seen had some serious bed sores. The patient was a paraplegic with a tracheotomy. The patient was dumped at our gate by an Iraqi ambulance.”

Jen writes Entry for May 09, 2006 “yikes time is flying fast! that is GREAT! well i have sad news....i recently came down with a bad bug! something called salmonila! yucky, well it caused me not to eat or drink for a couple days landing me in the hospital with dehydration! so needless to say i am sticking to the gormae food i can make in the microwave! so if any of you readers are out there reading this and sending care packages to either your loved ones or myself ( i share!!) send anything that can be stored on a shelf but in a TO GO form... oh and anything that can be made in the microwave.”

Bandit36 writes Media Mismanagement “(This started out as a response to a comment by Blogging One's Own Trinkets, but it grew into what I felt was worthy of a post)
Given the nature of the Green Zone and the city surrounding it, most journalists rarely travel outside the wire and as a result they're only exposed to this small patch of "Little America" and they never get to figure out why things are the way they are inside the wire. This journalist in particular talks about State Department people who serve 3 month tours and compares it to people like me in the military who server 1 year tours. My question to this guy is, how long do you plan to stay and where do you plan to go?”

Serving The People of Iraq writes A Glimpse of the People of Iran “Summary: The populace of Iran has as much desire to emulate Western liberties as any country in the Middle East, and is very likely more at odds with its government than any country in the region. Here’s a brief look at what the people of Iran have to endure as their leadership rushes headlong into a desired confrontation with the United States.”

Pat Dollard at Hollywood Interrupted writes A VIEW FROM THE GOO (DOLLARD DISPATCH #4) - April 27, 2006 WORLD EXCLUSIVE Pat Dollard “I’ve been told that the former Hollywood agent Patrick Dollard is a madman, a drunk, a drug addict and a bullshit artist. A media professional actually told me that he didn’t believe Dollard was in Iraq, let alone making a film. Stories abound about this man, but the only one I’m buying right now is that he has risked his life putting together a film that supports our troops and the war effort they are committed to.
What you are about to see are not images from some Steven Spielberg feel-good fantasy about a war. This is not “United 93,” and it is definitely not “Syriana.””

Fun with Hand Grenades writes Charlie Kilo, part two “Once again the call to throw my gear on as quickly as possible and get in the truck came. It always comes when I lie down to take a nap. A word of caution for night owls such as me who are considering military service: you are going to be in a world of hurt when you get deployed. Be prepared for not getting a good night’s rest. Ever.”
