Web Reconnaissance for 10/06/2006

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

Bruce Thornton writing at Victor Davis Hanson writes Total Silence “I’ve been reading one of the great works of recent history, Robert Conquest’s Reflections on a Ravaged Century. His chapter on “Soviet Myths and the Western Mind” is particularly fascinating, and ripe with parallels to our own battles today against Islamic jihad. As Conquest documents, many Western intellectuals and academics were delusional about the reality of the communist threat. For a host of reasons — a quasi-religious faith in utopian socialism, neurotic hatred of their own culture, vulnerability to an ideology that dressed itself in scientific garb, an adolescent romance with revolution, and sheer ignorance of the facts — many professors, pundits, politicians, and religious leaders refused to believe that Soviet leaders meant what they said about revolution and subversion.” (READ MORE)

Kobayashi Maru writes Winning the Korean War “For those who even care to remember, the horrors of the bloody Korean War are tucked away alongside images of sock hops, early Elvis Presley tunes, and other 1950's-era bygones. Yet anyone who's read even one good book or scholarly article on the DPRK (aka, North Korea) appreciates that the Kim dynasty (current leader Kim Jong-il and his late father, Kim Il-Sung) has been resolute and utterly serious in viewing it as an ongoing conflict it fully intends to win.” (READ MORE)

Hugh Hewitt writes The ABC Assault on Jordan Edmund “The Oklahoman details the impact on Jordan Edmund of the revelation that he and Mark Foley conducted an IM exchange full of graphic sexual language. Some reports have suggested that Edmund punk'd Foley, and then forwarded his IM exchange to other pages, and that somewhere along the line the IMs were given by someone to ABC's Brian Ross, who had them posted on the ABC web site. It is also possible that Edmond was contacted by ABC and did not object to the use of the IMs.” (READ MORE)

Cassandra writes A Lack Of Clarity, III “Last night the half vast editorial staff just zipped down the Capital Beltway, at times achieving breathtaking speeds of up to 2 miles per hour. As we dove in and out of traffic like a deranged harpy on crack we idly weighed the benefits of ending it all right then and there. Is it, we pondered snidely, even possible to commit suicide by rapidly inhaling the decidedly eco-unfriendly fumes emitted by the BMW in the lane ahead? The problem, we found, lies in holding one's breath without laughing whilst perusing the truly impressive assortment of bumper stickers of the outraged persuasion adorning the nether regions of said conveyance. Who in the holy hell puts bumper stickers on a new BMW?” (READ MORE)

Dan Riehl writes YouTube Responds To Censorship Complaint “As you may recall from yesterday, YouTube appears to be embracing censorhsip on behalf of groups like CAIR, which is linked with radical Islam. Evidently the Little Green Footballs blog placed a video on line to address the issue discussed in this post and subsequently CAIR took steps to pull anti-radical Islamist videos from YouTube. And according to this report via Michelle Malkin, who has had one of her videos banned, some have also had their YouTube accounts closed. After several attempts to contact YouTube, they finally responded and referred me to the PSA below:” (READ MORE)

Captain Ed writes Missing The Low-Hanging Fruit “In all of the heat surrounding the NSA warrantless surveillance program and SWIFT banking intelligence, we seem to have lost track of the uncontroversial communication taps allowed by law. The Washington Post reminds us in an editorial that we have no bar to reviewing prisoner communications, and yet the imprisoned terrorists already in our custody have little problem sending mail to their jihadist friends unmolested:” (READ MORE)

Mohammed of Iraq the Model writes America's sin...Hesitation “In the last post we talked about the biggest mistakes of Iraqi leaders and politicians and today I'm going to talk about America's mistakes. I chose this order for my thoughts because Iraqis with their mistakes contributed more to the current problems in Iraq than America did. America too had her share of mistakes that made things go in the wrong direction instead of helping out. Perhaps America's biggest mistake was the hesitation in keeping up the strategy of preemptive war. Yes, America used that strategy in Iraq but failed to go on, and instead of chasing terrorists, America stopped at Iraq and sat waiting for terrorists to come in.” (READ MORE)

Michelle Malkin writes Raise Your Voice Against Jihad Lawyer Lynne Stewart “Radical left lawyer Lynne Stewart, convicted of helping terrorists by smuggling messages of violence from imprisoned Sheik Omar Abdul Rahman, faces sentencing for her crime just 10 days from now. On Oct. 16, her terror-coddling sympathizers plan to show up in full force in court in lower Manhattan.” (READ MORE)

Patterico writes Patterico’s Exclusive Interview with a Man Who Has Spoken to the Terrorists at Guantánamo “Here is a roundup of links to the five installments of my interview with Stashiu, a Gitmo psyche nurse who has spoken with the terrorists for hours. Part One: Introduction. Stashiu tells us about a terrorist who threatened to have Zarqawi (who was then still alive) cut off the heads of Stashiu’s family while he watched — and then cut off Stashiu’s head. Part Two: Stashiu arrives at GTMO, and tells us what the terrorists are like. Part Three: Hunger strikes, suicides and suicide attempts, and mental illness. Stashiu opines that the suicides were a political act. Part Four: Treatment of the detainees, and the detainees’ treatment of guards. Also, desecration of the Koran — but by whom? Part Five: Stashiu reacts to Big Media pieces about GTMO.” (READ THEM ALL)

Good News From The Front:
Bandit 36 writes B36 News - 06 October 2006 “By way of www.mnf-iraq.com I got my hands on the al-Masri video which you can see below. I did a bit of research and found that it was two months to the day between when we captured Zarqawi's 'fumbler' video and when we gave him the 500lb lobotomy. Based on this and the fact that we've been nabbing his buddies left and right, I'd say that he's got less than two months left until he's either captured or finds out if he gets his virgins.” (READ MORE)
