BAGHDAD – Coalition force members detained 21 suspected insurgents in two simultaneous raids in the early morning of Jan. 10.
Acting on tips, Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 18th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 1st Infantry Division, conducted two unrelated but simultaneous raids on homes in the southwestern portion of the Iraqi capital.
In one raid, nine suspected insurgents were detained when sizable quantities of materials for making roadside bombs were found in the residence. All nine suspects are still being held for questioning.
In a second raid, Soldiers surrounded and entered a home in southwestern Baghdad after receiving information about a possible insurgent cell operating out of the home. After entering the home, they found four pistols, three AK-47s, 12 magazines of ammunition, seven armored vests, $2000 in cash and Iraqi Dinar worth $3000. Twelve more suspects were taken into custody following this raid.
Both raids were carried out in an attempt to stem sectarian violence in Baghdad.
