The high levels of small arms and light weapons in both military and civilian possession in Bosnia and Herzegovina, a legacy from the 1992-1995 war, have proven to be a serious threat to security and stability within the country, which is why the UK MOD is committed to helping Bosnia reduce this threat.
The UK MOD has been working with the United Nations Development Programme (UNDP), the lead agency in Bosnia for reducing the country's stockpile of small arms and light weapons. UNDP acknowledges the 'generous contributions made by the UK' and in November 2006 UK Armed Forces Minister Adam Ingram opened an Explosive Waste Incinerator in Bosnia to destroy surplus ammunition. Now, the main focus is on building the capacity of the Bosnian authorities to tackle the small arms and light weapons problem themselves.
