One of the things that you do upon first arriving on the scene is a "size-up" of the situation. In point of fact this scene size-up begins as you leave the station: have you been to this location before? What kinds of homes/business/etc are in the area? Are there any "other hazards" to worry about? Is it a Single Family Structure, Multi-Family, one story, two, more? The list goes on...
So when a buddy assigned to another station responded to a house fire last year he had the opportunity to see a house that defied classification:
