Web Reconnaissance for 03/20/2007

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

In the News: (Registration may be required to read some stories)
Funding more than war “Nearly half of the $21 billion that House Democrats added to President Bush's request for emergency war funding would go to nonmilitary spending and to pork projects.” (READ MORE)

Insurance-rate rise a recipe for disaster “Hurricane Katrina was the death knell for access to insurance for many Gulf Coast residents. Even coastal residents in Mid-Atlantic and New England states are encountering a backlash from insurers because of the 2005 storm.” (READ MORE)

Climate scientist sees cover-up “A NASA scientist who said the Bush administration muzzled him because of his belief in global warming yesterday acknowledged to Congress that he'd done more than 1,400 on-the-job interviews in recent years.” (READ MORE)

War Bill Includes Tempting Projects “House Democratic leaders are offering billions in federal funds for lawmakers' pet projects large and small to secure enough votes this week to pass an Iraq funding bill that would end the war next year.” (READ MORE)

Justice Job Considered For Ousted Prosecutor “With the Senate poised to rein in the attorney general's powers to appoint federal prosecutors, the Justice Department is engaged in discussions aimed at giving a new job to one of the seven U.S. attorneys dismissed without explanation on Dec. 7, according to a Capitol Hill Republican.” (READ MORE)

Al-Qaeda Suspect Says He Planned Cole Attack “An alleged key al-Qaeda operative with close ties to Osama bin Laden told a military hearing at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, that he organized the attack on the USS Cole that killed 17 U.S. sailors in 2000, according to Defense Department transcripts released yesterday.” (READ MORE)

On the Web:
Cal Thomas: Happy Independence Day Iraq “This may be the beginning of the fifth year of this war, but it is only one skirmish in a conflict with a lengthier past and a long future. Pundits, politicians and protestors who want to isolate Iraq from the rest of the world war, of which it is just one part, suffer from tunnel vision.” (READ MORE)

David Limbaugh: Republicans Won't Stand When Democrats Lie “As long as the administration and Republicans allow Democrats a monopoly on righteous indignation, it's doubtful they'll make headway in convincing the electorate they hold the moral high ground on the important issues of the day.” (READ MORE)

David Strom: A Bridge Too Far Left? “The full-scale attack on Fox News by faux-populist Democrat Presidential Candidate John Edwards and the Nevada Democratic Party is going to be presenting some serious issues for the mainstream media, even if they don’t understand that yet.” (READ MORE)

Frank J. Gaffney, Jr.: Discouraging Profiles “One of the finest contemporary examples of such courage is Senator John McCain’s steadfast advocacy of American success in Iraq and absolutely correct, if unfashionable, warnings of the costs of failure. To his credit, when asked about the possibly catastrophic price such a profile might inflict on his presidential ambitions, the Senator has declared, ‘I would rather lose an election than lose a war.’” (READ MORE)

Jay Tea: Seeing how it's done “A little while ago, I wrote about a blind activist in the Boston area who got bent out of shape because he wasn't allowed to tour the USS John F. Kennedy when she made a call to Beantown. The navy, attempting to head off a potential PR disaster, offered him a private tour when the ship wasn't being mobbed (3,500 visitors an hour), but he stood his ground: he wanted to be treated just like everyone else.” (READ MORE)

Andi: Vietnam Veterans: NEVER AGAIN... “Things are looking bleak for Cindy Sheehan. Cindy was recently forced to share the spotlight with other Gold Star Mothers who do not share Cindy's defeatist mindset, and on Saturday, she and her ilk were outnumbered and out-classed in Washington. Yesterday, the stage was not the exclusive property of the anti-American contingent. The number of patriots who participated in the Gathering of Eagles, despite bitter temperatures and bone-chilling wind, was utterly amazing.” (READ MORE)

Cassandra: Time To Rethink America's Domestic Intelligence Paranoia “In today's Wall Street Journal, Richard Posner has an excellent piece on the recent revelation that the FBI may have improperly issued national security letters. Those eager to blame the Bureau may wish to pause, however, before they rush to judgment and define the problem:” (READ MORE)

Fortress of Solitude: The Media Jihad “I’ve mentioned the Media Jihad that our enemy is engaged in. They are trying to use the US media against us, to break our will and turn us against the War on Islamic Extremism (aka The War on Terror). Unfortunately, the leftist US media is all to willing to comply. After all, CNN thinks nothing about giving a prime-time spot to a Terrorist propaganda film.” (READ MORE)

Tanker Brothers: Anti-War Protest Anything But "Peaceful" “A shameful thing happened in Milwaukee, Wisconsin yesterday. Students from the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee organized a protest against the war. They have a right to do that, yes. However, vandalism of property is what happened. I did see it on the news last night (CBS). It was their lead story. Today I checked all the major websites for the local news. ABC has nothing. FOX news has video. NBC has video and a write up. I just find it interesting that one channel can just ignore this story.” (READ MORE)

John Hawkins: Pics From The San Francisco Anti-War March This Week-End “Once again, Zombie hit an anti-war protest and snapped the pics that the mainstream media just won't show you. Why don't they want their audiences to see these pics? Because it would embarrass the MSM if the American people realized that this is what anti-war liberals are really like…” (READ MORE)

Dale Franks: Talking Past Each Other “There’s a bit of a dustup going on between Billy Beck and Lindsay Beyerstein. The dustup, in and of itself is mildly interesting, and you can catch the particulars of Mr. Beck arguing at Ms. Beyerstein’s place here. Essentially, in response to Ms. Beyerstein’s pooh-poohing the idea of using force to protect one’s home against a burglar, Mr. Beck responded that he would, in fact, bust a cap in some mutha who invaded his home in an attempt to steal, say, his dad’s classic guitar. That prompted the dustup in the comments. My interest, though, is not so much in the dustup itself, but rather in the illumination it provides about how the Left goes about arguing with Libertarian—and Rightish, more generally—ideological arguments.” (READ MORE)

John Hinderaker: Bad News from Iraq; Or Parts of It, Anyway “There have been a lot of press reports today about the latest ABC News poll from Iraq. The Associated Press headlines: ‘Poll: Iraqis Gripped by Fear and Anger.’ ABC News' own site draws even more negative conclusions from the poll: These characterizations are not necessarily unfair; the poll data certainly are not good. But if you actually look at the underlying data, which you can access from the ABC News site, some interesting patterns emerge.” (READ MORE)

Pirate's Cove: World Can’t Wait Vs. Bill O’Reilly “This exchange has it all. Hysteria. Insanity. Ultra Progressive Talking Points. The inability to substantiate claims. Continuous, non stop chatter, including interruptions, with said talking points without giving the other side a break. False ‘facts.’ In other words, today's typical moonbat.” (READ MORE)

Patterico: Commenter wls Defends an Administration That Can’t Be Bothered to Defend Itself “I said last night that I’m fed up with defending the Administration on the U.S. Attorney firings, given that the Administration can’t be bothered to defend itself, and repeatedly sabotages its own case. I’m purely in watchdog mode at this point — out to correct inaccuracies for the sake of the truth. But commenter wls, a long-time Assistant U.S. Attorney, is still interested in defending the Administration. He has some good points, and I thought it might be useful to link and quote to a few of them, in the interest of promoting a better understanding of this controversy.” (READ MORE)

John Noonan: Thank You Eagles “Judging by the size of the Eagle crowd, their core message got alot of people off their butts. With one notable exception, of course. The mainstream media. The failure of media organizations to grasp the historical importance of this event is simply staggering. It goes beyond ideological slant, indicating a systemic breakdown in the mainstream media's ability to recognize what is and isn't newsworthy. And the Gathering of Eagles was most certainly newsworthy.” (READ MORE)

Kobayashi Maru: Good News Never Sells “Just five articles--three by mainstream media outlets--two by The Times of London (here and here) and one by FOX News--are reporting on the results of a 5,000-person opinion poll of Iraqis recently conducted by Opinion Research Business, a UK survey firm. Five. Think about that for a moment. Major new piece of information about what real Iraqis on the ground think about what's going on there and this new important set of facts and insights is greeted by... crickets.” (READ MORE)
