Web Reconnaissance for 05/03/2006

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

Fbl of Fuzzilicious Thinking writes It Ain't Over... “Some interesting things are still going on in the Fran O'Brien's - Hilton saga.
First of all, reportedly there may have been ongoing lawyerly conversations between the parties as late as Tuesday, and more interestingly, an article by Lisa Hoffman last weekend mentioned that the American Legion had offered to help Capital Hilton pay for the installation of a new elevator. The cost of the elevator had bee cited as one of the issues in development of a new lease for Fran's, with reports being that it was more than one year's worth of rent. Apparently that wasn't an idle offer by the Legion.”

Diary Of A Hollywood Refugee writes Voices From The Frontline “I've been involved in discussions on several over at The Castle and Grim's Hall about the relationship between the Military PAO and the Media.
At points through these discussions, I've mentioned the need for milbloggers, and the PAO, as well as "citizen bloggers" to find other ways to help people look at the war differently..to grab their attention....and give them reason to try to understand this war DIFFERENTLY.”

Rhymes With Right writes What Do Real Americans Feel On Immigration Issues? “Ask them in Herndon, Virginia, where yesterday's election swept several supporters of a day-labor center for illegal immigrants out of office…”

Grey Eagle writes A Sister’s Tribute “Jordan Leigh has written a beautiful and moving song for our fallen soldiers and dedicated it to her brother Kenneth Schall who died while serving in Iraq. Listen to her song:
Soldier, I Thank You
Jordan Leigh is trying to have her song played on Memorial Day. I think one way to help her get exposure for her song is to encourage the other websites and blogs to link back, trackback, or use (http://www.afemalesoldier2.com/songs/soldier_thank_you.html) as a link or pop-up on your site. I will absorb the bandwidth in order to help her get her song out there. She lost her brother, a soldier, it is the least we can do to help the family and to honor him.”

WO1 Michael Fay USMC writes Afghan Images, Afghan Memories “There's one incident from my trip to Afghanistan back in May of 2005 that I love sharing. I went out on a patrol along the Pech River to survey an IED site. The battalion's executive officer was making his rounds of the various FOBs (forward operating bases) the previous week when his vehicle was destroyed by an IED set in the road that parallels the river. Miraculously, other than busted ear drums, no one was seriously hurt. One of the drawings with this posting is of the XO's driver.”

Dadmanly writes Vietnam Orthodoxy “David Gelernter writes a searing indictment of those who would say, “Iraq is like Vietnam, we need to pull out now.” His answer, summarized: “No More Vietnams!”
In this piece in the Weekly Standard, Gelernter dispels the lies that lie at the heart of much of Liberal Orthdoxy about Vietnam, an Orthodoxy that continues to cloud the vision (and judgment) of those who so stridently oppose our efforts in Iraq, even as we gain the upper hand against Al Qaeda. (What is it that the WSJ uses as a footnote for this? Al Qaeda that has nothing to do with Iraq in Iraq that has nothing to do with Al Qaeda.)”

Politics of a Patriot writes MCRD Parris Island “When I got to school Monday, one of my classmates who is joining the Army said he had something for me and produced a Military Channel special he had recorded for me over the weekend about Marine Corps boot camp on Parris Island. Being hardcore Army, I was slightly shocked when he said he watches this same special every time it comes on and cannot pry himself away from the tv.”

Kim Priestap writing at Wizbang writes Sheriff Arpaio Focusing on Illegal Immigration “I love Sheriff Arpaio. He's a take no crap from anyone sheriff who actually enforces the law. This is what he's doing to stem the flow of illegal immigrants over the Arizona border:”
