7 killed in Afghan police checkpoint attack in S. province

Afghanistan Sun (ANI) | Wednesday 13th March, 2013 | Kabul | One Afghan policeman and six militants were killed in an attack launched overnight by Taliban at a checkpoint in southern Afghanistan province of Helmand, an official said Wednesday. "Unknown number of Taliban militants raided a police checkpoint in Zhranda area of Sangin district late Tuesday night as a result one policeman and six militants were killed," the administrative chief of the Sangin, Mohammad Sharif, told Xinhua. Combined Force Arrests Taliban Leader in Helmand Province

DOD | Compiled from International Security Assistance Force Joint Command News Releases | WASHINGTON, March 11, 2013 – A combined Afghan and coalition security force arrested a Taliban leader and detained another insurgent in the Nawah-ye Barakzai district of Afghanistan’s Helmand province today, military officials reported.
The leader is accused of coordinating ambushes against Afghan and coalition forces and is believed to have a history of directing attacks using improvised explosive devices, rocket-propelled grenades and other weapons.  (READ MORE)

Soldiers Honoured for Afghanistan Battlefield Bravery

Haroon Siddique | The Guardian | Thursday 27 September 2012 |  A soldier who got back up to help evacuate a wounded comrade after being knocked unconscious on the battlefield is among more than 100 service personnel awarded military honours for exceptional feats.

Rifleman Matthew Wilson, 21, was hit on his helmet during an ambush in Helmand province, southern Afghanistan, last October. He came round after a few seconds with a throbbing headache but advanced into a firing position on open ground to protect an evacuation helicopter.

He said: "The first thing I thought was 'Can I see the firing position?' I thought I need to move somewhere else I can see it. I looked about 50 metres down the field … sprinted down there." (READ MORE)

Combined Force Detains Insurgents, Seizes Narcotics

International Security Assistance Force | Joint Command News Release | KABUL, Afghanistan, Sept. 27, 2012 – A combined security force detained several suspected insurgents during an operation to arrest a Taliban facilitator in the Washer district of Helmand province today, military officials reported.

The facilitator is alleged to coordinate the movement of insurgent fighters and weapons, as well as coordinating attacks across northern Helmand province, officials said.  (READ MORE)
