DOD Identifies Army Casualty
The Department of Defense announced today the death of a soldier who was supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
Capt. Waid C. Ramsey, 41, of Red Bay, Ala., died Aug. 4 in Paktika province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when his unit was attacked with small arms fire. He was assigned to Headquarters and Headquarters Company, 20th Special Forces Group (Airborne), Birmingham, Ala.

Glenn Beck Rally Raises $5.8 Million for SOWF
Through its partnership with radio/television talk show host Glenn Beck, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation is pleased to announce they have raised $5.8 million, far exceeding the original goal of $3 million, thanks to the extraordinary generosity of Glenn Beck fans.
The public and businesses were moved by a series of radio and television promotions through the Glenn Beck Program which highlighted the foundation's programs to provide support and assistance to the families of wounded and fallen military special operations personnel. The SOWF was recently awarded its fifth consecutive 4-star rating for its financial efficiency. The promotion campaign, which included an online auction featuring collectible items, culminated with the Restoring Honor Rally held at the Lincoln Memorial in Washington, DC, on Aug. 28.
"The outpouring of public support to the foundation and the men and women serving in the military has been incredibly heart-warming,” said John T. Carney, Jr. SOWF President. "Glenn Beck led the charge to make sure America never forgets the sacrifices of our fallen and wounded military personnel, and now thanks to Glenn's efforts the foundation's noble cause is known by millions of people across the country.
The Foundation, along with Glenn Beck staffers, worked together for the past eight months to produce a high-quality event while responsibly managing the expenses, including getting certain items donated or greatly discounted.
"While the expenses and donations are still being finalized, we are confident that the total amount raised will be significant,” said Carney. "Also just as important and meaningful are the number of new donors and supporters that the event attracted.”
Funds raised will go towards programs supporting the families of fallen and wounded special operations personnel, including college educations for the surviving children and immediate financial assistance for the families of severely wounded troops. Last year the foundation provided $2.7 million in scholarship grants, academic and financial counseling to its families, including 118 students enrolled in colleges and universities across the country.
Because surviving children are often very young, the foundation invests funds for when those children reach college age.
"We made a promise to that service member that we will provide his or her children with a college education – even if it is 15 or 18 years down the road.”
That is what makes the Special Operations Warrior Foundation different from other scholarship charities. The SOWF has a pro-active program to include each of the eligible families into its programs through the outreach of its school psychologist, invitations to special events, birthday cards, and phone calls.
"We let them know that we are part of their extended family, and they can contact us for any reason,” explained Carney.
With more than 100 students eligible for college each year, the foundation's financial need, as determined by a professional actuarial corporation is $76 million. The SOWF currently has $29 million in its investment portfolio.
"Thanks to Glenn Beck and his supporters, the Foundation has seen a significant increase in donations that will go a long way toward fulfilling the foundation's commitments today and in the future,” said Carney.

GLOCK Inc. donates $100K for fifth consecutive year to SOWF
GLOCK, Inc. made a $100,000 donation to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF) during the Special Operations Forces Industry Conference (SOFIC) on June 15. During the past five years, GLOCK has donated $500,000 to SOWF, a non-profit organization providing college educations to the surviving children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel killed in combat or training.
Accepting the donation on behalf of SOWF was Col. John T. Carney Jr., the founding father of Air Force Special Tactics and current President of SOWF, and Taniya Wright. Taniya's father, Sgt. James Wright, died in a training accident in 1987 while serving as a member of the U.S. Army's Special Forces. Taniya was 4, and her younger sister, Taryn, 2, when they lost their father. Through donations such as GLOCK's, SOWF was able to provide them with full college educations their father would have wanted for them. Taniya graduated from the University of South Florida in 2006 with a degree in Mass Communications and now works as an associate producer at the NBC affiliate in Tampa. Taryn graduated in 2008 with a degree in Film from the Savannah College of Art & Design. She is currently working in Los Angeles in the film industry.

Another Maryland Hero Gives His All to Ensure our Freedom
The Department of Defense announced today the death of three soldiers who were supporting Operation Enduring Freedom. They died Sept. 16 in Helmand province, Afghanistan, of wounds suffered when enemy forces attacked their vehicle Sept. 15 with an improvised explosive device. They were assigned to the 3rd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group, Fort Bragg, N.C.
Killed were:
Sgt. 1st Class Bradley S. Bohle, 29, of Glen Burnie, Md.;
Sgt. 1st Class Shawn P. McCloskey, 33, of Peachtree City, Ga.; and
Staff Sgt. Joshua M. Mills, 24, of El Paso, Texas.

Wounded Marine's Heartfelt Video Documentary
In July 2006, Keith Zeier a Marine serving with the 2nd Reconnaissance Battalion was injured by an IED explosion that inflicted severe nerve and muscle damage to his left leg and severe head injury.
The injury ended his Marine Corps career and doctors told him that he would have to walk with a cane for the rest of his life.
Through sheer tenacity, determination, and mental toughness, Keith Zeier has rehabilitated himself to the point that he is running the Keys 100-Mile Race, May 16, in honor of fallen and wounded special operations personnel, and the Special Operations Warrior Foundation.
The Special Operations Warrior Foundation provided Zeier $2,000 so his mother could travel and be bedside during his recovery.
"The constant and severe pain that I suffer in my leg serves now as a reminder of those great men with whom I've served and befriended. Not to mention those who have laid down their life in defense of this country. I am running this race in honor of them and the job that we loved to do. Not a day passes that I do not think of the sacrifices they have made and how it has impacted their families, friends, and loved ones," said Zeier.

Tampa Dinner Honors SOF Troops and their Families
Some 400 military personnel, active and retired, civic leaders and corporate sponsors joined the Special Operations Warrior Foundation at Tampa's A La Carte Event Pavilion for a special "Red, White and Blue Salute to Special Operations Forces" honoring Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel and their families. Above: SOWF graduate, Taniya Wright tells the audience about how she and her sister were able to attend college thanks to the generosity of those who support the foundation.
Hosted by Master of Ceremonies, Dick Crippen, the program included entertainment from former U.S. Army Ranger-turned country music singing star Keni Thomas (see video clip of Keni performing one of his songs) and a keynote speech from Commander, United States Special Operations Command, Adm. Eric Olson.
The evening's highlight was when Adm. Olson introduced Navy Lieutenant Jason Redman. Lieutenant Redman was critically wounded in 2007 while in battle with Iraqi insurgents, but refused to allow his wounds control his situation and those around him. He wrote a message that was posted outside his hospital room door that let those who were about to enter "... if you are coming into this room to feel sorry for my wounds, go elsewhere. The wounded I received, I got in a job that I love, doing it for the people I love, supporting the freedom of the country I deeply love. I am incredibly tough and will make a full recovery..." The memorable evening ended with Taniya Wright, daughter of Staff Sgt. James Wright, a Special Forces soldier who lost his life in a training accident in 1987, talking about the father she lost and how it changed her family's lives forever.
Taniya graduated from the University of South Florida in 2006 and is currently working at WFLA-TV Channel 8 in Tampa, FL.

Anheuser Busch and Dale Earnhardt Jr, Salute the Troops
Proceeds from Sale of Die-Cast Replicas Will Benefit the SOWF.

Budweiser and NASCAR's four-time Most Popular Driver, Dale Earnhardt Jr., are saluting the troops this NASCAR season with two military-themed paint schemes and collectible diecasts, the proceeds from which will provide college educations for surviving children of fallen Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps Special Operations personnel.
Look for Budweiser's brown and beige Desert Camo #8 Chevy on Memorial Day weekend at the Coca-Cola 600 on May 27 at Lowe's Motor Speedway.
The red, white and blue Stars & Stripes car will run in honor of Independence Day at the Pepsi 400 on July 7 at Daytona International Speedway.
Budweiser will donate proceeds from the sale of the two collectible diecast car models to the Special Operations Warrior Foundation (SOWF), which provides full-ride college scholarships to surviving children of Army, Navy, Air Force and Marine Corps special operations personnel killed in combat or training missions, and immediate financial assistance to special operations personnel severely wounded in the global war on terror. More than 700 children currently benefit from the efforts of the SOWF.

Here is a link I've been meaning to place on the sidebar for sometime and just never got around ot it. Its The Special Operations Warrior Foundation and they provided funding and support to the children of our fallen special operators.

Blackfive is already helping spread the word, infact it was at his site that I first found out about the foundation.
Derrick Rodriguez is literally in the clouds after graduating from OH-58D Flight Course at the Army's Aviation School at Fort Rucker, Alabama, where he learned to fly the Kiowa Warrior helicopter. But being in the clouds is not what excites this 26-year old.
Rodriguez was just 10 years old when his family got the tragic news that his father was killed, along with six other soldiers, when their medevac helicopter crashed in Iraq while deployed for Desert Storm. The 1991 death of Master Sgt. Eloy Rodriguez, Jr., a Special Forces medic assigned to the Special Forces Command, rocked the entire family.
"Losing my father meant I had to grow up overnight," said Rodriguez, "and life had to be taken seriously. But I also took everything my father taught me and I worked hard to be the best at everything I did. I also knew that there were people in worse situations then me."
As they have done for the past 26 years, the Special Operations Warrior Foundation put Rodriguez through college. The Warrior Foundation provides college scholarship grants, not loans, to the surviving children of special operations personnel killed in combat or training. The grants are provided cover tuition, books, fees, room and board.
