Web Reconnaissance for 10/03/2006

A short recon of what’s out there that might draw your attention.

Crazy Politico writes The Detainee Bill “If you have access to the Wall Street Journal, either in print or online (Paid reg. Required), please read "The Military Commissions Act reaffirms our commitment to the Geneva Conventions". By John Warner, John McCain, and Lindsey Graham. Unfortunately I can't post any of it here, since I don't have online access to it (I'm cheap), I had to read it hard copy while waiting for an oil change. For the folks who's been complaining about the habeas issues with the bill, they have an outstanding dissertation on the issue, and the fact that appeals rights are in place in this bill. In fact, more of them, according to the authors, than are required by the Geneva Conventions, or have ever been given to any US POW.” (READ MORE)

Allahpundit writes Angry Muslim Confronts British Soldier … In His Hospital Bed “Basra? Baghdad? Try Birmingham: Seriously wounded soldiers have complained that they are worried about their safety after being left on wards that are open to the public at Selly Oak Hospital, Birmingham. On one occasion a member of the Parachute Regiment, still dressed in his combat uniform after being evacuated from Afghanistan, was accosted by a Muslim over the British involvement in the country. ‘You have been killing my Muslim brothers in Afghanistan,’ the man said during a tirade.” (READ MORE)

Hugh Hewitt writes Where Do These Killers Come From? “Today's massacre in the village of Paradise, in Lancaster County Pennsylvania is just the most recent in a string of killings by individuals on rampages --killers who did not intend on getting away, but who were just out for blood. Last week a high school official was killed at a school in Wisconsin by a 15 year old, and another child was murdered and others assaulted by a homeless maniac in Bailey Colorado.” (READ MORE)

Jay Tea of Wizbang writes What a Peace of Work “Yesterday, the Nobel Prize for Medicine was awarded, and soon the one in Physics should be announced. That reminded me that the last one awarded every year is the Peace Prize, and I started thinking about who might be so honored this year. The winners, I've noticed, tend to fall into three categories: the obscure, the wildly inappropriate, and the politically correct. (I call them the "Who?," "WHAT?!?!," and the "Shoulda seen that one coming" categories.)”(READ MORE)

Blackfive writes Godspeed, Canadian Army Private Josh Klukie “Here's a tough but true story that you need to read about the Canadian troops slugging it out with the Taliban in Afghanistan: KANDAHAR, AFGHANISTAN — On the evening they said goodbye to Private Josh Klukie, there was clarity in the eyes of the men who fought beside him. They watched his casket hoisted into a cargo plane in the warm afternoon light, snapped to attention and marched off the tarmac to prepare for another mission.” (READ MORE)

Captain Ed writes Blankley Says Hastert Must Go “The Washington Times' Tony Blankley has joined a small chorus of voices calling for the resignation of Denny Hastert as Speaker of the House: As I wrote earlier, the strange reluctance of Republicans to investigate the earlier e-mails combined with Hastert's clumsy attempts to distance himself from the scandal on Friday have compounded the scandal -- which by all rights should fall completely on Mark Foley himself. Hastert's staffers told the press on Friday that he hadn't known of a problem with Foley, forcing John Boehner to retract his statement that he himself had told Hastert of the issue. Only after Thomas Reynolds went public the next day did Hastert himself admit that he had known of the earlier e-mails.” (READ MORE)

Michelle Malkin writes 9/11 Memorial Attacked “This is Paul Talty. He joined the NYPD in 1993. On Sept. 11, 2001, at age 40, with two pre-teen children and a pregnant wife at home, he was called to the World Trade Center to assist with rescue efforts. He was one of the first of the first responders on the scene. He died in the line of duty. Swap Blog honored Talty as part of the 2996 Project here. On a street corner light post in Queens, there is a 9/11 memorial to Talty. Or rather, there was a memorial to Talty. The NYPost reports this morning that it has been destroyed:” (READ MORE)

John Hawkins writes The United States Military Should Stay Out Of Sudan “Over at the WAPO, Susan E. Rice, Anthony Lake and Donald M. Payne argue that the United States should bomb Sudan into submission if need be in order to stop government sponsored massacres in that country: ‘After swift diplomatic consultations, the United States should press for a U.N. resolution that issues Sudan an ultimatum: accept unconditional deployment of the U.N. force within one week or face military consequences. The resolution would authorize enforcement by U.N. member states, collectively or individually. International military pressure would continue until Sudan relented.’ (READ MORE)

Smash writes Walter Reed Epilogue “Friday was my last day on the job in DC. After work, I drove up Georgia Avenue for one last Friday night with my friends outside Walter Reed. There are only a dozen members of Code Pink present, looking rather pitiful on the sidewalk. Having nothing further to say to them, I leave them to stew in their self-inflicted misery. I make my rounds amongst the groups rallying to support the troops outside the main gate. This evening, they outnumber the Code Pink crowd by about three to one. As usual the Code Pink bunch evacuate promptly at 9pm. They don't want to be there when the buses get back from the Friday night dinners, because they don't like the single-digit-salute that they typically receive from the wounded soldiers and their families.” (READ MORE)

Huntress writes On Censorship, CPIC, and Lt.Col Barry Johnson “In response to my Open Letter To LTC Barry Johnson, CPIC Trevor, who works for CPIC, and has a blog titled The Will To Exist, posted a comment/response in which he repeats the same LIES put forth by LTC Barry Johnson on Pat Campbell's radio show. I have already addressed those two lies in my blog post. Trevor was merely repeating what LTC Johnson told him when, after reading my blog, he asked LTC Johnson, for whom he works, why Mike Yon had been denied an embed.” (READ MORE)

Stop the ACLU has Attacks On Christmas Begin Early “Hasn’t this politically correct mentality gotten out of control enough? Talk about slippery slope…now kids can’t even celebrate the non-religious traditions of Christmas because it might make someone might associate them with Christmas? This has gotten beyond ridiculous! ‘For more than a week, Mary Anne Bender helped her 10-year-old daughter learn her Christmas pageant lines and daydream about what costume she’d sew for the after-school play at Windmill Point Elementary. But on the second day of practice, fifth-grader Kayla Vance was told she can’t play Mrs. Claus in A Penguin Christmas because the principal has axed any mention of the word Christmas in holiday festivals.’” (READ MORE)

The QandO Blog writes (UPDATED) Libertarian Democrat: Part I – Initial reaction "I got an email from a very good friend alerting me to a Markos Moulitsas piece at Cato Unbound. I had already read the piece and was mulling a reaction. If you’ve read the article by Moulitsas you know it begins with the following paragraph: 'It was my fealty to the notion of personal liberty that made me a Republican when I came of age in the 1980s. It is my continued fealty to personal liberty that makes me a Democrat today.' It was what my friend said after quoting that paragraph in the email that really brought home my disagreement with the theme of the article: 'These people are trying to *steal* a concept to which they cannot claim the slightest right. That opening paragraph of his is as wrong as it can be: if you asked him about 'the notion of personal liberty' when it comes to *socialized medicine*, for instance, what do you think you would get from him?'"
