US Military Builds Health Center on Remote Island Off Yemen

Story by U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Marian Popescu
Combined Joint Task Force – Horn of Africa

QULANSIYAH, Yemen -- It’s not easy traveling to the scenic island of Socotra, but members of Combined Joint Task Force Horn of Africa know their efforts are paying dividends, especially for the people inhabiting this remote location. Engineers from CJTF-HOA have been making regular visits to inspect the progress of local contractors and check the quality of construction of several projects. Accompanied by their drivers they make the scenic coastal-road trip between project sites to inspect, document, and interact with the contractors.

Capt. Andrew Bouchard is an experienced construction engineer from CJTF-HOA’s Engineering Directorate and most recently traveled to Socotra in January to inspect the progress and quality of work on the health center. He is tasked to ensure that contractors follow the ‘statements of work’ delineated on the contract.

“This health center will serve as a screening center for the 2200 citizens of Qulansiyah, and will spare them the two hour drive to the island’s main hospital” said Captain Bouchard. “The facility is for minor care only, but will be manned 24 hours, and will have one full-time doctor and three nurses.”
