RELEASE # 015

Troopers from 3rd Squadron, 71st Cavalry Regiment, Task Force Spartan teamed up with local leaders in the Barg E Matal District of Nuristan Province to bring clothing, food and educational supplies to impoverished Afghans March 29.

The troopers delivered the aid items via sling-load to local government officials who in turn distributed the humanitarian assistance materials to local leaders. Local leaders delivered the aid items directly to the people of the rural isolated district located in the Easternmost reaches of Nuristan. The remote, mountainous area contains some of the highest peaks in eastern Afghanistan.

Food items distributed include flour, oil, sugar and baby formula. The Islamic Republic of Afghanistan and Coalition military team also handed out clothing items, including shoes, coats, gloves, scarves and hats. Prayer rugs, tarps and educational materials were also distributed. Squadron leaders described the mission as a demonstration of unity and cooperation among Coalition forces and the Afghan government as well as a worthy humanitarian effort. The operation also reflected allied solidarity with the people.

“This shows just how far and how high we’ll go to help the Afghan people,” said Army Maj. Eric P. Zenk, a Task Force Spartan spokesman. “The government of Afghanistan, Afghan National Security Forces and Coalition forces are bringing valuable assistance to the people no matter how isolated the location or difficult the terrain. It’s pretty obvious who cares about the welfare of the people of Nuristan Province and northeast Afghanistan and who doesn’t.”
