Joint Security Operation Uncovers Cache

BASRA — A major security operation was launched in Basra city in the early hours on Sunday.

The joint operation, led by the Iraqi Army, supported by the 2nd Battalion, The Duke of Lancasters, and assets from the Joint Helicopter Force, was initially a detention operation aimed at capturing a high level terrorist in the Al Hyyaniyah district of Basra City. Acting on information received during the initial part of the operation, a follow-up search was conducted, which uncovered a significant arms cache in the Hay Al Mudhara district.

In addition to the arrest of six individuals, the find included a significant quantity of weapons and munitions, including components used in making roadside bombs, quantities of explosives, sniper rifles and Rocket Propelled Grenades (RPGs). Intelligence and rogue militia propaganda material were also successfully recovered.

During the recovery from the operation, soldiers from the Multi National Forces (MNF) were attacked by an Improvised Explosive Device, small arms fire and RPG fire. This attack resulted in a Warrior armoured vehicle being immobilised, however all members of MNF safely returned to the Contingency Operating Base. A member of the rogue militia was shot during the extraction of the Multi National Forces.

“This operation shows the increasing capability of the Iraqi Security Forces as they take on the rogue militia who are seeking to disrupt the establishment of a secure environment and endanger the lives of the people of Basra,” said Maj. David Gell, the Multi National Division (South East) spokesman. “Once more, our soldiers have shown their selfless commitment in supporting the Iraqi Forces as they disrupt the terrorist activities, and move ever closer to Provincial Iraqi Control in Basra.”
