Afghan National Police Detain Ghanzi Area Taliban Commander

Release Number: 07-01-03P

BAGRAM AIRFIELD, Afghanistan - Afghan National Police advised and assisted by Coalition forces, conducted a cordon and search operation to remove key Taliban leaders operating in the Qarabagh District of Ghazni Province during the early morning hours of May 31.

Creditable intelligence led the combined force to a compound in the village of Gawmesak. ANP members detained Haji Salam, a Ghazni area Taliban sub-commander and improvised explosive device expert, while conducting a subsequent search of the compound.

Salam, a suicide bomber facilitator who is known for his terror tactics, has also been responsible for leading an attack on the Qarabagh District Center and killing dozens of innocent Afghan women and children with IEDs and suicide bomber attacks in Ghazni Province.

No shots were fired during the successful mission and there were no injuries to any Afghan civilians reported.

“The information gained from Haji Salam will assist us in finding other key Taliban leaders,” said Army Maj. Chris Belcher, a Combined Joint Task Force- 82 spokesperson. “We will continue to pursue and interdict Taliban leaders who threaten the Government of Afghanistan.”

“Taliban leaders have two choices; stop fighting and reconcile with the Government of Afghanistan, or face elimination by Afghan National Security and Coalition forces,” he said.
