Iraq – What’s been happening since I went on Hiatus

A quick look at the feeds lets me know that progress is still being made in Iraq no thanks to policy decisions by the Democrats. Thankfully the CiC is still sending the right message and General Petraeus is still using those troops sent in as the surge to his advantage. So here is a quick round up of the progress being made that you won’t hear about on the news.

There are plenty of dead tangos for those of you so inclined to keep score:

CLCs find caches, extremists in Arab Jabour - Since Dec. 24, the Concerned Local Citizens group in the Arab Jabour area has played a significant role in diminishing al-Qaeda in Iraq’s ability to attack Coalition Soldiers, Iraqi Security Forces and local residents. The CLC has assisted Soldiers from 1st Battalion, 30th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division by turning in weapons caches and improvised explosive devices. Eleven IEDs were taken to 1-30th Inf. Reg., 2nd BCT Soldiers at an observation post in northern Busayefi Dec. 24. Three of the IEDs were rigged with pressure-plate detonation systems.

An AH-64 Apache helicopter from the 3rd Combat Aviation Brigade, 3rd Inf. Div. engaged the house with a hellfire missile. The engagement resulted in one enemy killed, one enemy wounded, one local Iraqi wounded and five suspected al-Qaeda members detained.

Coalition forces target al-Qaeda safe house; 7 killed (Muqdadiya) - Coalition forces killed seven terrorists today during operations targeting al-Qaeda in Muqdadiyah. Coalition forces targeted associates of an al-Qaeda in Iraq leader allegedly responsible for coordinating and directing a large terrorist group, and carrying out executions in the Diyala River Valley region. Intelligence reports indicate the group killed at least two people execution style in the last few days and has engaged with Coalition forces on multiple occasions. This operation follows several weeks of coordinated raids against this group by Coalition forces.

Coalition forces kill al-Qaeda in Iraq leader (Baghdad) - Coalition forces killed a terrorist leader and two other terrorists during operations on December 27 to disrupt al-Qaeda in Iraq networks operating near the capital city. During the operation, Coalition forces targeted Muhammad Khalil Ibrahim, the deputy military leader for the al-Qaeda in Iraq network operating south of Baghdad. Ibrahim was a key planner in numerous attacks against Coalition forces operating in the Mahmudiyah area, and was also involved in the facilitation of foreign terrorists and weapons. Also, Ibrahim and other senior al-Qaeda members were allegedly planning to conduct a large-scale attack against Coalition forces in the near future.

Coalition forces disrupt al-Qaeda networks in Diyala, Mosul; two killed, 12 detained - Coalition forces killed two terrorists and detained 12 suspects today during operations targeting al-Qaeda in central and northern Iraq. The targeted individuals are associated with the leader allegedly responsible for directing a large terrorist group that conducts executions in the region. Intelligence reports indicate the group recently executed two people and has been engaged in numerous fire fights with Coalition forces over the last few weeks.

Its not all shooting in Iraq, there are also numerous reconstruction projects such as:

Sewer project helps east Baghdad community clean up their streets - Thousands of
families in east Baghdad will soon have their neighborhoods free of raw sewage in the streets. Iraqi construction workers are completing a $30 million sewer project in Kamaliya, southeast of Sadr City. About 60 kilometers (36 miles) of sewer pipe has been installed, ranging in size from 110 millimeters for house connections to 800 millimeter trunk lines. In addition, 10 pump stations were constructed with the largest having the capacity to move 600 liters per second (more than 2,000 cubic meters per hour).

Street Lights Shine on Bad Guys, Restore Sense of Safety - With small additions like street lights, a sense of safety is returning to the streets of Arab Jabour and Al Buaytha. Having been installed more than a month ago, it took some time before residents of the area saw the effect of having the lights. The same is true for the Soldiers of the 2nd Brigade Combat Team, 3rd Infantry Division, out of Fort Stewart, Ga. Now, Soldiers and Concerned Local Citizens (CLC) are relishing in the peace of mind the lights bring. The CLC program is similar to a Neighborhood Watch in the United States. The street lights are just the first step in securing the night for CLCs, says Yassin Majid Yassin a member of the CLCs in Arab Jabour.

We're even delivering soccer supplies:

Soccer Equipment from Colorado Donated to Iraqi Children - Iraqi Minister of Youth and Sports, Mr. Jasim Jaffar, participated in an event Dec. 30 to distribute soccer equipment donated by the Colorado Rush Soccer Club of Littleton, Colo. The equipment's distribution to about 100 grateful young Iraqis took place in Zawar Park in Baghdad. Mr. Phil Reeker, Counselor for Public Affairs, represented the United States Embassy in Baghdad, and Col. Guy Beougher represented Multi-National Force - Iraq.
